Getting this job is not exactly tough, because ,
1. One of my mum's former colleague works there, and she recommended me.
2. They were really in need of an assistant.
Yes, I'm just assisting the teachers there, not qualified to teach. Yet. The salary is RM500++.
I wouldn't say it's A LOT, but seeing that this is my first job, I'm quite very happy. Plus, working here is definitely a CHALLENGE. Furthermore , I was BORED after completing my STPM.
An idle mind is a devil's workshop. So, I have decided to work here, no matter what.
I was asked to assist Teacher Uma, who is in charged of a class of 4 years old.
Okay, honest first impression here.
1. They're cute.
2. Oh my goodness, can they JUST SIT DOWN AND STAY CALM ??????
It's a mission impossible because they are basically kids, ACTIVE KIDS and they crave for attention. CONSTANTLY.
From the first day itself, I have one student gluing to me almost all the time, and crying in between, asking for her mum. It took me almost one week to " weaken" the gluing effect. She's still gluing to me , anyways.
And did I mention the number of kids in my class ? 17 !!!! And another two is going join us after Chinese New Year ! * The horrors * LOL
Every child is different, physically , emotionally and intellectually. Some of them can tell you stories , some won't even open their mouth. Some can put me to shame when they do their colouring so well, some .... well they are not really keen.
Working here has definitely taught me a couple of lessons even though I have been here just for a week. This is what we call a REAL LIFE working situation.
1. If you want to discipline a child, start YOUNG !
Kids nowadays are really pampered, and they are really blessed in a sense that they do not really lack a thing. Their parents have worked extra hard to give them the best toys, clothes, school, but the best ATTITUDE ! That's when we teachers stepped in. Ha!
I have started shouting at my students now when they misbehaved in class.
*Somebody is so gonna get it from me * mode is switched on when I hear anyone shouting in class !!
2. Children are sensitive.
Of course they are sensitive !!! Even we are SENSITIVE !!!!! They have feelings too. At times, they can sense competition, favoritism, anger and sadness. And yes, some are just DRAMA KINGS AND QUEENS.
I don't know about you, but I noticed that some of my students basically get frightened when some of the teachers teased that their parents have abandoned them ( when they were late to fetch them )
I try my best not to say that. EVER. Oh dear, never.
3. Train them to finish their food.
If they were primary school students, I would have bombarded them with images of children who experienced malnutrition and as a result died of hunger. That would really scare them off when they refused to finish their meals. One of my student refused to eat potatoes , and I was thinking,
" WELL THEN. DON'T EAT FRENCH FRIES WHEN YOU GROW UP !" Ha !
Well, I guess everyone is just different.
There goes my first week of working ! I hope that I'll mature and grow along this journey. Will continue this work till June. I'll need to sort out university applications after that. Granted if I have time, I'll look for a second job.
Only then, these kids will miss me more ;)
